My Reflection

Winston-Salem State University's biology department will forever be the epitome of how professors are supposed to support and help their students succeed in life starting in the lectures and labs to help prepare us for the future. The faculty in this department encourages the development of knowledge in every student so they can become the best at their personal craft once we graduate and become citizens of the real world.

When I got here I knew what I wanted to do and with the help of the faculty and staff in the Biology and Chemistry department, I was able to understand what it is that I want to do with the rest of my life and how to get there. My first big performance was on scholarship day Spring 2014 with Dr. Kump. I felt like I could do anything after that day. Soon enough I joined the Minority Association for Pre-medical Students (M.A.P.S.) and also Tri-Beta National Biological Honor Society. It was an honor to have worked with Dr. Williams for the S.U.R.E. internship during summer 2015 on his research on how sound waves affected the growth of plant and bacteria cells. I also spent 8 months volunteering at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in the intermediate care unit.

My most recent accomplishment that I have been awarded is the acceptance into the Atlantis Project fellowship program. I spent four weeks shadowing doctors overseas in Lisbon, Portugal in four different specialties, including obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, neurology, and cardiology. I also spent time after shadowing to do volunteer work which involved teaching some of the doctors English. The experience is one that I will never forget. Learning about their healthcare system was very interesting and it gave me that extra push to want to go into medicine. As graduation time gets closer I have decided that a post-baccalaureate program will be my next goal to reach. I do not have my eye set on a specific school just yet, but I am determined that it will lead me in the right direction to become the best professional I can be.
